More Productive Editor Layout in Unity

The default layout in Unity does not promote a highly efficient workflow. The “Scene” view and the “Game” view share the same window. This forces us to switch between the two views. It would be more convenient to have both the “Scene” and the “Game” views visible at all times.

So let's change that by clicking the button called “Default”. “Default” is the name of the current layout.

Select “Tall”. You will immediately notice that both the “Scene and “Game” windows are visible.

This is a good start, but we need to make some more changes to better utilize the use of our screen area. Let's drag the “Hierarchy” and the “Project” windows and drag the left edges to the right.

By doing this, we give more space to the “Hierarchy” and the “Project” windows. Let's modify the “Project” window. The current configuration for the “Project” window is the “Two Column Layout”, let's change this to a “One Column Layout”.

This looks better. The “Project” window is no longer crowded.

We increase our workflow by having the “Hierarchy”, “Project” and “Inspector” windows on the same side of the screen. This helps a lot when your monitor is 43". Now let's save our layout. Click on the “Tall” button.

Click on “Save Layout”.

Type a name for your new layout and click “Save”. We are done. Go ahead and fine-tune the layout to your taste. You may find yourself creating layouts often during courses. Your instructor may have you create a custom layout for the course. You may find yourself with custom layouts for mobile development, PC development, and more. The main thing is to find a layout that works best for you.
